If you want a lesson in tyranny, observe how governments meddle with your right to consume this basic plant. If you want a lesson in economics, observe how governments and not the market are causing ephedrine to spike to ludicrous prices. It is almost easier to just consume cocaine.

Ma Huang looks like rosemary, which I believe is in an evergreen herbs category. Are these two similar?

I want to express my respect. Very detailed articles, gives plenty of information and indepth analyse.
btw, talking of Ma Huang.
Herbalife weight loss programm used to include gurana and ephedra in their drinks. (not any more)
Great tonic, oldest treatment for bronchitis, why it became "controlled substance" ? Unlike amphetamine, heavily used in so called "LiDa" - weight loss pills from mainland China, Ma Huang is very mild, and couldn't make any harm. Unless some eat it raw and choke on it.
Anyway, great posts, like it!

Ma Huang is well regulated now--unfortunately. I think we're technically supposed to keep a drug log if we use it too.

I think it's very different from gui zhi and can't imagine using gui zhi instead of it--certainly not for asthma. It's unfortunate that the unregulated drug industry thought it was a great weight loss herb (considering being real deficient is a contraindication) and it's also been decided that it might be used in place of ephedrine.

Oh on your housekeeping post--wordpress has a plugin to make sure you get redirected to the link you want. Check the plugin list for it. I think it's called permalink redirect (I'd search by those keywords). I *think* it works.

Damo,

It's often hard to come by in the US as well. We can get it in granules, but not in bulk easily. Sometimes it seems like we won't be able to get it at all!

Gui Zhi doesn't begin to come close - they're just completely different. I mean, they both are exterior releasing warm herbs - but if you look in the Shang Han Lun, you can see the great differences in prescribing guidelines...

Hopefully you'll be able to get this important herb at some point. Either way - thanks for your comment!

Hi Eric,
Thanks for this post.
In Austalia this herb comes under a scheduled drug category-We haven't got it at our uni herb clinic, so your description of it is very helpful!
Apparently its been well abused and so the government regulated it. The next one we have is Gui Zhi, cinnamon. However I really cant believe it has any of the same potency...
By the way its descibed in the acrid and warming category by our lecturer
