More insight...I once went to a hypnotherapist to help me with my insomnia and she pointed out to me a very valuable fact: babies NEVER get insomnia. Translation being that insomnia is all in our heads. I try to keep this in mind when I am up at 3am...

Hi Eric - great site! I just came across it while trying to understand why I have a symptom that keeps coming up at the same time every day - between 11 am and 1 pm. I can't seem to associate my symptoms with the heart principles...I experience a histamine type reaction during this time which is greatly exacerbated by eating. I am confident it's not a food issue as over the years I've eliminated all suspects...plus it doesn't seem to matter what I eat and it never happens at breakfast or dinner. Any thoughts? Thx so much.

This was interesting post. I had troubles to understand that thing about symbolism and number five, but your reply to Lucy made things clear. Thank you very much.

I think another interesting thing about the relationship with the Heart and the Number Five is it's place in numerology. When you make your Chinese numerology chart, you draw a sort of tic-tac square, and then each of the nine squares is in charge of a number. The number five is in the middle of all of the squares. It's also the only number that is closed in on all sides by the other numbers.

Heiner Fruehauf has an article on his classicalchinesemedicine.org site, "All Disease Comes From the Heart: The Pivotal Role of the Emotions in Chinese Medicine," that talks about how all illness can eventually be traced back to the Heart, and we know that the Heart is called "The Emperor" of the body in Chapter 8 of the Suwen. To me, it makes sense that the number 5 would serve as a metaphor for the Heart, because of it's central and protected position within Chinese numerology.

The odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) tend to be associated with yang qualities, so the choosing of the number 5 does denote some kind of yang energy principle that resides in the Heart, even though it is considered a fu/yin organ. The numbers 2, 5, and 8 are used to represent Earth energies in Feng Shui and so here is a correlation between the Earth phase and the Heart too. The Earth phase is that which is a connector and harmonizer and the Heart plays that role in the body, right? (I'm still a student here.)

Lucie,

Thank you for your question. Numerology is complicated, isn't it? From one perspective, you can see 9 as associated with the Heart. Also, in the Neijing, the number 7 is associated with Fire, which is associated with the Heart.

I use 5 in this article because the fifth month on the Chinese calendar is associated with the Heart. There are other symbols that strengthen this association, but that really warrants a separate article. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hello, Eric,
thanks for this article. may i have one question? i didnt really get the part, when you are speaking about symbolism and number five. i always imagined heart beeing number nine, the most yang in numerology. could you please shortly explain that connection again? Lucie.
